Everything you need to know before buying copper wire in India — from understanding AWG and SWG gauge systems to current market price trends and what to check for quality.
Understanding Copper Wire Gauges
Copper wire is measured in gauges. In India, two systems are commonly used:
SWG (Standard Wire Gauge)
The most common system in India. A higher SWG number means a thinner wire:
- SWG 14 = 2.032mm diameter — used for power distribution
- SWG 20 = 0.914mm diameter — used for general wiring
- SWG 30 = 0.305mm diameter — used for winding and electronics
AWG (American Wire Gauge)
Increasingly used for international projects. AWG numbers also increase as wire gets thinner.
Types of Copper Wire
- Bare Copper Wire: Uncoated, used for grounding and earthing
- Tinned Copper Wire: Tin-coated for improved solderability and corrosion resistance
- Enameled Copper Wire: Insulated with enamel for transformer and motor winding
Quality Checks When Buying
- Verify electrical resistivity (should be ≤1.724 µΩ·cm for pure copper)
- Check conductivity percentage (min 99.9% IACS for ETP copper)
- Request mill test certificate (MTC) from the supplier
- Verify weight per km against standard tables
Market Pricing in India
Copper prices in India are closely linked to LME (London Metal Exchange) prices plus import duties and local margins. Prices can vary significantly. Always get at least 3 quotes and verify the copper purity.
