Nickel Silver vs Brass: Uses in Industry and Why the Difference Matters

Despite its name, nickel silver contains no actual silver. Learn about the key differences between nickel silver and brass, and why each material is preferred for specific industrial applications.

What is Nickel Silver?

Nickel silver (also called German silver) is an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel. It contains no silver despite its silvery appearance.

Composition

Typical: 60% Copper, 20% Nickel, 20% Zinc. The nickel content gives it a silvery-white appearance and superior corrosion resistance compared to standard brass.

Key Advantages of Nickel Silver

  • Higher corrosion resistance than brass
  • Better spring properties
  • Attractive silver appearance without plating
  • Good electrical resistivity (used in resistors)

Applications

  • Cutlery and tableware (EPNS — Electro-Plated Nickel Silver)
  • Musical instruments (flutes, clarinets)
  • Costume jewelry and accessories
  • Precision resistors and control components
